Georgia
Georgia, the "Empire State of the South," stretches from the Appalachian Mountains in the north to a fertile coastal plain. Starting in 1733, British settlers under James Oglethorpe displaced the native Creek and Cherokee, and tobacco and cotton plantations dominated until the War Between the States.
Georgia's economy today is dominated by textile manufacturing and food processing, as well as wood products, marble, agriculture, and services. Georgia is the largest peanut-producing state. Atlanta, the capital and largest city, is the principle transportation and communications hub for the southeastern United States.
