Macau
On December 20, 1999, China reclaimed Macau after 442 years of Portuguese rule effectively ending the colonial era in Asia. The flag-lowering ceremony at sunset lasted only a few minutes after which Macau became the most recent Special Administrative Region in China (MSAR).
Demographically, Macau is 96% Chinese and 2% Portuguese with Cantonese the most commonly spoken dialect.
